My Hero work for New Zealand Studies
The heroes I chose to write about aren’t one, but many people, the Suffragettes of New Zealand. Lead by Kate Sheppard, the Suffragettes fought hard for years to convince the government to allow women the right to vote, and they got results.
All across New Zealand, the Suffragettes protested, created petitions and gathered allies. The petition they presented to Parliament contained over 24,000 names. Protests sprang up across the country, with many people marching down the streets of their hometowns.
The Suffrage movement was a worldwide movement, though in the end, the Suffragettes of New Zealand won against the government first and New Zealand became the first country allowing women the right to vote. This was a very important time in our history, and something to be proud of. Our women were a key point to a great change to the world.
The Suffragettes were strong, dedicated and clever, and I aspire to be like them. I relate to the Suffragettes in many ways, be it my strong heart, passionate about what I love, or my dedication for what I must do. I strongly disagree with sexism and discrimination, as did the Suffragettes, who saw women not being allowed to vote as unfair, as their opinions mattered too. I am dedicated to solving problems, helping people and myself. I am passionate to the causes I join and strive for success, as did the Suffragettes.
The Suffragettes should be heroes to all women of New Zealand. They fought hard, and were fought against, often being carted away to prison among other things, yet they pushed on and came out on top. With our generation typically being known for giving up too easily, we should all aspire to be like the Suffragettes. While we may not have problems such as sexism as a common factor in our country, we now have problems such as climate change, poverty and abuse to deal with. By idolising people who changed our country, and the world, we will learn from them to stay strong and do everything you can to help. They may not be around today, but they will still continue to help us change the world.
